Korean skincare: where to start without overspending

The ten-step routine looks intimidating and expensive. In practice, four well-chosen products are enough to start, plus one sunscreen that is essential under the Moroccan sun. Star ingredients, application order and beginner mistakes.

Korean skincare: where to start without overspending

K-beauty has a reputation for being complicated: ten-step routines, shelves crowded with bottles. Good news, most of the results come down to four well-chosen products, plus a fifth that is not up for discussion. Here is how to start without wrecking your budget.

The real principle: hydrate, do not attack

The Korean philosophy comes down to one idea: well-hydrated skin defends itself better than stripped skin. Instead of reaching for harsh formulas that dry everything out, you layer light textures, a water, a fluid, a cream, so hydration holds all day. That is layering. And consistency matters more than the number of products: a short routine done every evening beats an ambitious one followed for three days.

The four products to start with

A gentle cleanser leads the way: it removes oil, pollution and makeup without leaving skin tight. If it feels tight after rinsing, it is too harsh. Next comes the hydrating essence or toner, a watery layer you press in with your hands on still-damp skin to prepare the ground. The serum is the targeted product, chosen according to your current concern: glow, marks, pores, discomfort. Finally the moisturiser seals it all in and stops water from evaporating. Four steps, two minutes, morning and evening.

Sunscreen, the non-negotiable fifth product

This is the best value product in the routine. In Morocco the sun is generous all year, including in winter and on cloudy days. Without protection, dark marks settle in and the work done by everything else is cancelled out. Apply SPF 50 every morning as the last step, in a real quantity: roughly two fingers' worth for face and neck. Korean formulas changed everything here: fluid textures, a non-greasy finish, no white cast.

The star ingredients, without the jargon

Hyaluronic acid holds water in the skin: it is the basic hydrator and suits everyone. Niacinamide works on glow, marks and the look of pores. Centella asiatica, the famous cica, calms reactive skin that flushes easily. Snail mucin brings comfort and suppleness, with a gel-like texture that surprises at first but works wonders on dehydrated skin. PDRN, a more recent arrival, is loved for its plumping effect. No need to stack them all: one or two actives are plenty.

In what order to apply

The rule is easy: thinnest to thickest. In the morning, cleanser, essence, serum, moisturiser, sunscreen. In the evening, the same without the sunscreen, adding an oil cleanser first if you wear makeup or a long-wearing SPF. Leave a few seconds between layers.

The beginner mistakes

Stacking seven products in your first week is the surest way to irritate your skin and never know what actually worked. Introduce one product at a time and give it two or three weeks. Do not swap your whole routine overnight because a video convinced you. And do not exfoliate daily: once or twice a week is plenty, and beyond that you damage the skin barrier. If your skin shows painful acne, eczema or a reaction that will not settle, a dermatologist is the right person to see; cosmetics are not a substitute for medical advice.

Adapting to your skin type

Oily skin: gel textures, a light essence, niacinamide, a fluid cream, and do not cut out hydration, since its absence is often what makes skin shinier. Dry skin: a rich cream, snail mucin, hyaluronic acid, and a second layer of essence if needed. Combination skin: one light cream everywhere, something richer on the dry patches. Sensitive skin: centella, short fragrance-free formulas, and a patch test on the inner arm first.
