Fashion jewellery doesn't cost as much as solid gold, but with the right care, it can keep its shine for years. Most tarnishing comes from everyday habits, not a manufacturing flaw.
Put it on last, take it off first
Perfume, lotion, hairspray: these products contain ingredients that attack gold and silver-tone finishes. The rule is simple: get dressed and apply your perfume first, put your jewellery on last. And take it off before a shower, the pool, or a workout.
Store pieces separately, away from air
Thrown together in a drawer, jewellery pieces knock against each other, scratch, and tangle. A separate pouch or compartment prevents friction. Prolonged exposure to air also speeds up oxidation: a closed box protects better than an open tray.
Gentle cleaning, never abrasive
A soft, dry cloth is usually enough to remove fingerprints and bring back the shine. If needed, a light rinse in lukewarm soapy water works for most fashion jewellery, but avoid abrasive products or long soaks, which damage finishes faster than they clean them.
Spot the risk areas
Rings and bracelets are the most exposed: they rub against clothes, keyboards, door handles. Sleeping in your jewellery or wearing it during exercise wears down finishes faster than anything else.
